Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.” From the Catechism of the Catholic Church 1213

We look forward to helping you prepare for your child’s first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship.

Baptismal Preparations

A Baptismal Preparation class is a requirement for expecting parents and for the godparents.  The class offers them insight and education about the Sacrament of Baptism.

The classes are held every first Sunday of every other month at 5:00pm in the cry room.  Call the church office for the next baptismal class.

Baptisms can be celebrated on any weekday or by special arrangements wit our priest or deacon.  Other recommended times are Saturday at 11 AM or Sunday’s after the 9:00 or 11:30 AM celebrations of the Eucharist.

Baptismal Requirements

Parents must be registered with the parish before Baptism classes can be scheduled.  If parents are members of a church other than St. James’s then they need to provide a letter from their pastor stating that they are active Catholices and are practicing members of their church.

God parents must be practicing Catholics, at least 16 years old, have made their First Communion and Confirmation, and are living the faith in good standing with the Church.  In addition to one Godparent, a non-Catholic may serve as the second Godparent and is considered a “Christian Witness” to the Baptism.

Both Godparents and Christian Witness must provide a letter of good standing their church.  This letter states that they are active members of their church and are fully practicing their faith.  If either Godparents or Christian Witness can not be present the can be reprensented by proxy.

Parents should be registered members of St. James Catholic Church.  If you are not a registered member you can fill out a registration form and return it to the church office.  For those  who are not registered members and/or outside of Savannah who wish to have their child  baptized at St. James must provide  written permission from the pastor of their parish to perform the baptism.
